If you have ever wanted to design and build your own games but find it difficult to learn programming languages such as C++ then Game Maker could be your solution. This book takes you through all the basics of learning to make games with Gamer Maker 6.1. I’ve tried using programs like Dark Basic with no success but using this book I was able to learn the features of Gamer Maker step by step. Gamer maker is a powerful program but the book gets you designing your first game withing the second chapter and goes on to explain more complex feature like making sprites to platform games. Gamer Maker may not be the first choice for all you budding game designers but it’s a wonderful powerful program. The book comes with Gamer Maker 6.1 and all the example files and sprites needed to complete the projects. I’m going to use this in my ICT classes to explain programming concepts, graphic design and collision detection. For those new to programming and want to learn about game programming I recommend this book.

Great Introduction to Basic Game Design Using Game Maker
23 Apr 2006 @ amazon.com
I stumbled across this book purely by accident whilst looking for another computing book and I was glad to have found it. It covers Basic Game Design and Creation using Mark Overmars Game Maker, whom is having a book published this year called - " The Game Maker’s Apprentice ", in June 2006.
Nanu Swamy and Naveena Swamy’s Basic Game Design and Creation for Fun and Learning is easy to get into and I found it quite refreshing to use. It covers most of the common functions in Game Maker and has useful examples used in a friendly and easy to understand way.
I would recommend this Book and the to be released Book by Mark Overmars, which would run nicely together to anyone looking into basic game design without the worrying of not having any programming knowledge. Nice and easy does it !

Good Way to Get Started

This is a welcome addition to the game development bookshelf. It is oriented to having youngsters begin designing games. If you have a young boy or girl, and they are into playing games on a PC, this book is intended to get them into designing their own games.
The book uses, and supplies a copy on the CD-ROM, Game Maker software. This is a 2D game development system that allows for the creation of games without requiring programming. Building a game, hoever, is not unlike programming. You have to define what the characters look like, you have to define what they can do. You are doing a lot of the same logic that programming requires.
Perhaps your little game player can be made into a game maker. And just possibly he or she will learn something about computers while they are developing their own game. Possibly this will give them an introduction into what they want to do later in life, not necessarily design games, but almost any task in the computer industry.
I know of no other books that take this approach, and I like it.
Excellent Book
