Should have looked better at the reviews...

I just got this book and after flipping through it, I’m realizing it’s not what I wanted at all. It’s a book trying to teach programming from step one using UnrealScript. The examples used don’t involve games. The programming given is not something you can directly apply to games. It’s just programming. Plain old programming. If I wanted this I’d go buy a C# or Java book, not UnrealScript. It is NOT game programming and so it really shouldn’t be called UnrealScript Game Programming All In One.
not what I thought the book would be

I was looking for a book to give in depth information on Unreal Script and how to make your own weapons, mods, mutators and game types, but I have not find anything in this book that helps you make your own types.
Unfortunately, this book was not what I was looking for. The title is misleading for its purpose.
Horrible Unreal Script Book OK Intro to programming book
04 Sep 2007 @ amazon.com
This is book is not really about UnrealScript. It is an introduction to programming tough though Unreal Script. The book spends more time going over how to use tools than how to use the language. It appears the author set out to write a better book but had to finish in a weekend. I would not recommend this book for people like me looking for advances in UnrealScript and the classes of UT2004. I also would not recommend this book due to some LARGE mistakes in programming foundations. Not a good book for people looking to start game design. I wish I could have a refund.
A Good Start...

While this book doesn’t actully get into writing funtional Code for the Game as far as i have gotten that is. it deffintly a Good place to learn the base of UnrealScript code.
With this base it and a review of other Scripts for the games it self, you can pretty much cobble togather anything.
No I’m still not do with this book And untill then, This review remains standing.
NOT all in one
22 Jan 2007 @ amazon.com
This is pretty much designed as if you wanted to look at UnrealScript as a base programming language for learning basic programming skills off of. This is definitely not useful at all for practical modding or general game making. It just goes into very basic programming abilities that unreal script. To be honest, I bought this for a class that bases the language in unreal script. I thought this book may be useful since it is ALL IN ONE (yeah right!). I was already adept in basic programming and this book was absolutely useless for practical gaming modification.
No Unreal Here

I was very excited to see this book and bought it immediately. I read it and was profoundly disapointed: the whole book consists of setting up an editing environment and running some non-Unreal text programs. I literally could write a better book in a week. I’d give it zero stars if Amazon allowed. If someone writes a half-way decent Uscript book, I’ll buy it. In the meantime google "uscript" and you’ll learn more than this book teaches you.
A good book for beginners

Keep in mind that the title of this book reads UnrealScript, not Unreal Tournament when buying this book. It tells of the basics of programming using UnrealScript.
The authors teach you the basics of scripting language and give you the tools to then go to the UDN for information on the hundreds of classes in the Unreal Tourney class hierarchy.
This is a good book for beginners. I found it helpful in getting me started in DOS, ConText and in understanding the basics of programming.

Excellent book on UnrealScript Fundamentals!

UnrealScript Game Programming All in One is an excellent introduction to the fundamentals of UnrealScript--great for somebody like me, who is just starting out. Flynt is a superior writer and uses easy-to-understand examples that helped me build basic skills. I’m very pleased with what I’ve learned and how far I’ve come, just using this book. I am looking forward to Flynt’s next book.

Read the book description!

"UnrealScript Game Programming All in One provides you with an introduction to the basics of UnrealScript". Read the reviews before you buy. They give you a pretty good understanding of what to expect from the book. That being said, the book covers exactly what the description states it covers. I’ll mark it down one star for the title as it seems a little misleading.
Beginners

I think it is important to know that this book is written for beginning programmers. I mean, the authors say that they are showing you how to program. I like it that you can learn how to program. It talks about DOS. These are things that are hard to learn about. And it shows you how to write lots of simple programs.
I think it was a good idea to do things this way. After you learn the basics from this book, you can then go to other things. This book is written for beginning programers. You should understand this before you buy it. If you want to learn how to program then it is a good book. If you already know programming, then you should probably just go to the UDN and obtain information from there. That is what the authors suggest.
"This book is suitable for anyone who is looking for a basic book on how to program with UnrealScript. If you are wholly new to programming and want to begin programming with a language that puts you in a position to immediately work with a game, then UnrealScript is perfect." -UNREALSCRIPT GAME PROGRAMMING ALL IN ONE, p. xiii
I couldn’t recommend this to anyone

Sorry to say, I couldn’t really recommend this book to anyone looking to either get into programming or trying to learn UScript.
There are numerous online tutorials that can offer better practical examples while still being understandable.

Misleading book title - don’t waste your money

I agree with the previous reviewer - the book is devoid of any useful information. If you think the author will teach you programming or game programming you will be sorely disappointed.
If you have the Unreal 2004 and would like to learn how to create scripts or Mods for it, do yourself a favor and go to 3dbuzz
You will notice on the menu "Video Training". Look for the one on Unreal Technology. There are dozens of free high quality video tutorials. When you run the video it plays right in your Windows Media Player. You can watch the video and follow the demonstrations - if you want you can pause the tutorial, go try out some of the stuff they are talking about then come back at you leisure.
In a couple of hours of using these tutorial you will learn more than if your were to read this book cover to cover.
Don’t waste your money on this boring useless book.
If you don’t have the Unreal 2004 buy the 2 DVD version for less than $20. The bonus DVD contains hundreds of hours of video tutorials - the same ones that are on the 3dbuzz website.
I gave the book one star because Amazon does not provide an option for 0 stars.
No game programming here
09 May 2006 @ amazon.de
If you are looking for a book to help you develop games in UnrealScript, this is not the book for you. The programs developed in the book only use text output and does not use the actual UnrealEngine object hirarchy.
The book pretends to teach programming. Why any one would try to learn general programming via UnrealScript is not exactly clear. There are much better places to start. And if you thought you can use this book to start writing cool mods, you thought wrong.
By chapter 8, you have spent most of your time setting up a development environment in one speciffic text editor. If you need that much guidance to get to a point you compile something, then trying to learn programming with UnrealScript is probably a bad idea.
In short:
If you are completely new to programming, this book will only confuse you. There are much better books and languages to start with.
If you are an experienced programmer looking for UnrealScript tools to develop games, this book does not have anyting for you.
