Incredible illustrations, great artists!Rating: 5

Digital Art Masters Series has always been a fascination for me, and now that i’ve had the chance to actually look through the pages of this awesome book (and Vol.3 as well) i can honestly say it was worth the wait!

More than a how to, these books focus on the overall process for artists to create their pieces. Their inspirations, their work flow, their tips & tricks to come up with unique and original ideas that have never been seen before or how they can transform something old into something completely new.

This is a great buy on its own but if you have the money, buy both Vols, you won’t regret it.

I got this book for Christmas and haven’t put it down ever since. It really is an outstanding book, showcasing the talents of an international cross section of CG artists. The book is lavishly illustrated with screen grabs of some key steps in the creation of a piece, which greatly helps to understand the artists process/technique. This book, however, doesn’t focus on specific techniques as much as on the thought process behind a piece. This book doesn’t teach you how to create digital artwork, in fact most of the descriptions assume that you already have a good handle on 3D modeling/texturing/rendering concepts. This is not a tutorial. But the book includes enough information to provide insight into an artist’s thinking process. If I may use a movie production analogy, this book is sort of the "behind the scenes" aspect of CG art creation.

The book is beautifully printed in color on good paper stock and the spine is stitched instead of just glued (which is the best way to bind a book).

CONS: There really are no serious downfalls with this book, however from an editorial stand point (I am not a expert at this but...) the book is full of typos and grammatical errors. It doesn’t take an English teacher to see that the editors could have done a better job of proofreading and editing the book. I suspect the work was made more difficult given that for a lot of the artists, English was not their first language. However, I think this oversight keeps the book from being a perfect 10 and for a book written in English, this is almost inexcusable.

This is a great book, lots of artwork. Granted, about half of the artwork you could find with a quick google, but its nice to have something real that you can hold. Its also great for the upcoming digital arts apprentice like myself who wants to see how other people’s art came to life.

I received this book as a Christmas present about 7 days ago, and havent put it down since. I find myself reading and re-reading the artists procedures and techniques, many of which I plan to try and incorporate into my own workflow. All of the images are masterpieces and have inspired me greatly. Anyone interesting in the realm of digital art, from seasoned artist to novice, should pick this book up for your personal library, you wont be sorry!

This book’s 2d & 3d images are beautiful. If your looking for a book to use as inspiration or ref., then this is your book. If your looking for step by step processes on 3d & 2d digital art, then this isn’t your book. Digital art masters is more on the theory side of explanations of why they created their art the way they did.

A superb collection of talentRating: 5

Digital Art Masters 2 is a superbly printed and bound selection of works by a selection of artists from around the globe. For those whose frequent online art communities, some of the artists or works might be immediately familiar. Each section revolves around a main piece which is shown from concept to completion, giving an insight into how each was made. This is followed by a number of smaller images of further works by the artist.

Giving a fantastic insight into the process behind the works, both 2D and 3D (probably a little more 3D), this volume features a good range of subjects and styles from automobiles to fantasy to children’s book-style illustrations.

Highly recommended.

Digital Art Masters is an inspiration to anyone creating art in a computer graphics environment. Covering vehicles, animals, characters, landscapes and more there is something for everyone.

The images have been created by a group of ’masters’, each one having 4-8 pages showing how they were created and the thoughts behind it. This isn’t a step by step ’how to’, but will inspire you to reach new levels.

The books has huge images throughout, really showing off what the fantastic minds and skills of the artists.

Highly recommended.

Awesome Book but a few minor issues with delivery.....Rating: 5

This book is fantastic! I received mine yesterday after waiting so long for it only to find out that the front cover had scratches all over it? I mean you think if you order a brand new book it would be in perfect condition. Well not in Amazons case. Anyway I emailed Amazon about the condition I received my order in which I wasn’t very happy with so they gave me the option to refund my money or re-order a new copy and I get to keep the one I already have! So I must say although the delivery of my book was damaged, Amazon are very good with their customer service base. Kudos to you Amazon. I’ll definately keep ordering product from you. Cheers

This is an awesome book, however do not order from amazon. I received mine today and there was several scratches on the cover as well there is a bend in the middle of the top of the cover (I don’t really know how to describe it except for a bend, it is wrinkled) and it go to the first page as well. As well the packaging was very uncared for and it looked like the box was thrown together and taped on the top, and the bottom had no tape and was easy to open which would lead to trouble if someone wanted to steal the items inside the package.

I also bought this book at Siggraph 2007, and am very impressed with my purchase. This is a tasteful and extensive collection at a very reasonable price. Section titles include Fantasy, Characters, Scenes, Cartoon, and Sci-Fi images. Each of these broad categories contains about 15 sub-sections that each focus in on one specific art piece, with several pages of in-progress work and discussion by the artist. Sections vary in length from 4 to 6 pages. Some are even longer. There are a few more 3d works than 2d, but this distinction is hardly noticeable.

The supporting 3d images include clay renders, wireframes, scene screengrabs (with lights, alpha planes, and other techniques displayed), and sometimes UI screengrabs. Supporting 2d images include reference images used by the artist, pencil sketches, and sometimes idea development before actual production began.

Unlike many other books, the binding of the Digital Arts Masters is surprisingly hardy. It has heft. I feel comfortable reading it without worrying about pages detaching from the spine.

I would recommend this purchase to those looking for some inspiration and technique ideas. After feeling a little frustrated with Ballistic publishing, I’m glad I bought this book.

A must own for anyone interested in Digital Art!!Rating: 5

Digital Art Masters: Volume 2 is simply awesome. It’s a great collection of some of the best digital art in the world, coupled with commentary from each and every artist. The provide their initial inspiration for their piece, and the workflow they used to achieve the results. What you get is a great combination of art gallery meets tutorial.

I was lucky enough to get this book for $25 @ SIGGRAPH 2007 in San Diego, however it’s worth the $65 it normally sells for. I actually can’t believe I got it at such a price. The hardcover is of great quality, and the book is nicely laid out. There are 60 pieces of artwork featured, as well as more pieces from each artists portfolio. It even gives a complete list of all the artist’s email addresses and personal websites in case you want to contact them for more info.

All and all, a great book...buy it now.
