More comprehensive than the "Dummies" books.

Adobe has done a very good job with their "Classroom in a Book" series. I purchased The "Dummies" book when I first started learning Photoshop 7. Then I took a college class that used the Adobe book (which is why I bought this book for CS3). Adobes’ book covers EVERYTHING you can do with Photoshop, albeit briefly. Just follow the book and you will at least touch on everything the software can do. I recommend it highly.

Nicely guided introductory tutorial for Photoshop CS3
23 Oct 2008 @ amazon.com
The book is easy to follow and tells you exactly what to do during the exercises to reach the intended outcome of the photos you are working with. It teaches you one thing then another, building as you go on with what you have done in previous chapters. It also comes with the CD-Rom of the contents you need for use with the book and exercises.

Adobe CS3 Classroom in a Book
07 Oct 2008 @ amazon.com
As a novice with Photoshop, other than Elements, I was looking for something that a beginner could use. This book was just the thing. Broken up into 1-2 hour lessons, it takes the user step by step through each lesson. The included CD with working files and some videos allows the user to see a final product before starting on each lesson.
The only down side to the book, and for some it will be a major downside, is that many of the reasons behind techniques are not well explained.
How about "wonderful in a book" ?

I had been looking for something that taught the basics and purchased the dummies book a week or so prior. I like doing tutorials online but they always skip steps. This book has been a lifesaver because it gives you the tools and practical applications. This is without a doubt, for this person anyway, the best book out there to actually learn how to use PS. I wish I had seen it prior to purchasing Dummies, I haven’t even cracked that book since I go this one. I love the lessons and step-by-step instructions!
Excellent teaching book
03 Oct 2008 @ amazon.com
Excellent book for the novice to learn photoshop. The CD has the lessons and the descriptions take you through a step at a time, VERY easy to learn. And it’s not necessary to go through in order, you can jump to whatever technique you want to learn next.
Adobe Photoshop Classroom in a book
03 Oct 2008 @ amazon.com
Very good self-teaching guide for the most part. Early chapters are easy to follow and the concepts are easy to grasp. By the time chapter 6 is reached the material is more difficult to grasp but the chapter is well written but the material should be broken up into either a separate chapter or into more chapters. This is primarily because the subject matter involves sometimes subtle effects. Have not made it past this point in the book yet but at about halfway through the book it looks good.
De-mystify Photoshop
01 Oct 2008 @ amazon.com
Adobe Photoshop is an incredible tool...if you know how to use it. Like many people, before I read this book, I was able to do some basic Photoshop tasks--cropping, moving, or resizing graphics--and some work with layers and color correction. However, I often left Photoshop wondering why the program wasn’t more user friendly. There were many tools I’d never used and others I’d been using incorrectly. The available online Photoshop tutorials I tried often left me frustrated with the level and quality of instruction. Then, I stumbled up on the Adobe Classroom in a Book series and found exactly what I was looking for.
Adobe Photoshop CS3 Classroom in a Book is organized as 14 separate, step-by-step lessons appropriate for Photoshop users of beginning to intermediate skill levels. The book begins with fundamental concepts and techniques to build the beginning user’s foundational knowledge of the tool. The instruction incorporates best practice uses for the tools and illustrates multiple ways of accomplishing the same tasks. The procedures for each project are clearly detailed, and, even though some tasks are repeated across projects, the authors never skip steps, helping the user commit basic procedures to memory through repetition. The projects increase in difficulty, building on techniques learned in previous chapters. To appeal to users of different skill levels, the book also provides "extra credit" sections to further explore techniques in more complex scenarios. For difficult concepts, the cd-rom provides QuickTime videos with further instruction.
The true test of any training is how well the learner implements their learning on the job. For me, the transfer of knowledge from the "classroom" to my graphic projects has been seamless. I no longer feel lost when I’m using Photoshop, and the quality of graphics I’m able to produce has greatly improved. Because the quality of instruction in this book was so high, I’ve begun purchasing other books in this series to build my knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite.
Good Introduction for What It Does
01 Oct 2008 @ amazon.com
I purchased this book as the textbook for a class in Photoshop. In that role it is quite good. It has lessons that are easy to follow along and build on one another. It is better written than many other intoductory texts, and the practical lesson format gets you hands on early.
However, it lacks depth. Two examples: In some of the lessons, the student goes through some steps and sets some parameters (say vibrance) at a specified level without the book explaining why that number was selected, or even what was actually going on. The book does not have any reference or look-up value, if you want to what a particular control or process really is, this is not the book.
The book’s intention is to get you going, at a rudimentary level, in Photoshop in a short time. It does that and reasonably well. If this is your first introduction to Photoshop, by getting you hands on, it is very good. However, I also have a very good instructor who supplements and does through the lesson areas in more depth, so I am not sure how good it would be without the classroom time. Without an instructor, you will need a more indepth book to back this one up.
The trick with a piece of software as powerful and complicated as Photoshop is how to get one the basic set of skills to start exploring without getting swamped. This book does that. But you will need more after using this book.
Have fun ...

CS3 in the classroom.

This is the required text for my photoshop class at junior college. We read from the book every day and follow the assignments as they say straight from the book. The only thing wrong with it is that I wish they would of gone more in depth with the tools. The lessons that come with it are fun but I still wish there was a little more.

Anyone learning photoshop for the first time, or upgrading to CS3, should get this book and read it through. Classroom in a Book, a novice’s tool
07 Jun 2008 @ amazon.com
I am completely new to a photo editing program like Photoshop CS3 Using the book "Classroom in a Book" has made the learning process so much simpler. Lesson material used is present so that you can see exactly what is being presented in the lesson by comparing what you have done with the pictures presented with the text. You are provided with an overview of what you are expected to learn at the start of the lesson. Then you are taken step by step through the procedure. The text is written in a way that is easy to understand and not written as if you were an experienced photographer. Having been a classroom instructor I appreciate the manner in which the material is prsented. I have not felt overwhelmed by the material.

Sorry I couldn’t give any review about this Photoshop CS3 book. I was very disappointed. I didn’t receive the book from the seller, bayaraa111, he took the money and quietly disappeared. He never responded to my emails. The only review I could give is stay away from this seller, check his reviews if you wanted, 100% negative from about more than a dozen of other unlucky buyers like me. I wish Amazon has a certified seller program to maintain its reputations and don’t let the sellers like bayaraa111 ruins them. I think the book is very helpfull for what we want to know and learn. I will give my thought about this book when I buy it from other sellers and Amazon resolves this matter for me. STATY AWAY FROM BAYARAA111 !!! STAY AWAY FROM BAYARAA111 !!! STAY AWAY FROM BAYARAA111 !!!

The Adobe Photoshop CS3 Classroom in a Book is the perfect learning tool for any first time user of Photoshop. I had never used photoshop before so I bought this book to learn how and it makes it really easy to learn. Lessons are included in which it takes you through a step by step learning experience so when done you know how to use the tools learned in the particular lesson. I would definetly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to use photoshop!

Step by Step book. You must have Adobe CS3 for better results. If you’re using an older version software it might not help that much; there are different new features with CS3. So you can’t follow it "step by step" with and older version of photoshop. The book itself is great. I’m always prefer the the books from the software manufacter.

This product helped me a lot because I’m new using photoshop however for a experienced photographer using photoshop this book is too simple. If you are a beginner like I’m this book is for you. The book has great exercises to help you explore photoshop and practice while you are learning. Practice makes perfect.
written very well

usually i have a really hard time reading books on computer programs, but this book is written very well. I am actually able to read this book, and follow along on photoshop. It goes over the basics, but without seeming to spend entire chapters on how to open or save a file. It moves quickly, but not too quickly. This is definetly the best book, on a computer program, that i’ve ever read.
Great introductory book!

I’m a novice to Photoshop. This book has proven to provide me with all the core details on how to get up and running quickly. A friend has learned all the Adobe products using Classroom in a Book and I agree that you can get a great introduction to the product just by using this book. The CD contains great projects that the book walks you through. Well thought through.
Buyer Beware.

I recently attended a two-day course on Adobe Photoshop CS3 as part of my conversion to digital photography and digital imaging. At the end of that course the students were all given a copy of this book which contains a training CD Rom. As I was already booked onto the "advanced course" in 14 days time, I eagerly put the CD into my computer to practise what I had learned. Only then did I discover the CD would not work without my having first purchased and installed the full Adobe Photoshop CS3 software.
In my case, I had already ordered that software so it was only a matter of a few days delay before I could get started. Just be warned that you cannot use this product without having first installed the full software package - and that is a separate purchase altogether.
Once that’s done, it’s actually great. Anyone who starts at page one - with no previous experience and no knowledge of the difference between a tool bar and a menu bar, will find it all fit slowly into place as the book teaches one step at a time and then builds on each step until you find yourself automatically going back to something already learned as though you have been doing it for years.
My only criticism of the book is some pretty silly typing errors. In one example you are referred back to a previous page only to find they got the page number wrong. In another, a list of tools is incorrect.
I did find such basic errors to be quite surprising (and very annoying at the time) from a team of people who are otherwise so technically competent.

pages missing

Entire pages (specifically, pages 147-162) are referenced in the index, but are absent from the book! And it doesn’t look like someone just tore the pages out. The pages are just not there. Also, as mentioned by other reviewers, this book is NOT for those who have been using Photoshop for at least a couple years.

Save your money and pass this one bye
08 Feb 2008 @ amazon.com
I have this book and just finished chapter 7. The book is adequate at getting you acquainted with the program but does not delve very deep into the "why" of things. It’s easy to work your way through the images on the CD and everything comes out hunky-dory but they don’t do a very good job of explaining the processes and why you’re selecting this item or that. So, when it comes time to work on your own images and attempt similar processes, it is of no use.

This book is great for beginers using Adobe Photoshop CS3. It takes you step by step through projects to get familiar with the tools and effects, it also gives ideas of how effects can be used for different projects. I may be too basic for advanced photoshop users.
